Notes on Combining Three Worlds

Well, first of all, I should say that Summons takes place outside of all my fanfic universes, but it uses elements from each of them, with the exception of Lunar . As odd as it may sound, I thought better of bringing in Ghaleon's saber-toothed cat and the other characters and events that have appeared in previous fanfics. The Ghaleon presented in this fanfic is much the same Ghaleon that appears in the Lunar games. Originally I planned to have Ghaleon go to Pentagulia with Sadoul and Kazyr, and Laurel (from Desperate Times Call For Desperate Measures ) would appear before Ghaleon just as Elynthia and Mira did for the other two. But since her relationship had not been fully detailed yet, I thought it best to leave her out. The incapicitation of Ghaleon worked out rather well for the story in any case, because it gave Sadoul another chance to develop into a more feeling character.

The purpose of this appendix is to outline the background material that went into the creation of the setting for Summons . None of my Vay or Popful Mail fanfics have been completed as of this writing, but much as with Lunar, I've added to the characters and their history.

Vay

One of the problems in Summons was reconciling the fact that both Vay and Lunar possessed their own dragons. To fix the problem, I twisted one of the legends I placed into my Vay universe.

Long ago, the Armor of Vay (which is similar to the armor Sadoul is found in when Kazyr ressurrects him in chapter 4) created such havoc that a group of humans and a group of dragons banded together for their mutual survival. They became the Segazzi. To symbolize the union, one of the greatest dragons, Anderax, became human and married a woman. His descendants kept some of their dragon blood in them, rendering them immune to fire and heat. If properly summoned, any of his descendants could take on his form and fight with the body of the greatest of dragons. (Sound familiar?)

In modern Vay, the island nation of Danek exists far away from Segazz and Danek has lots of dragons. Since these dragons live freely in Danek Castle, it was only natural to conclude that someone possessed the power to communicate with them--someone in a position of power. Jeal's heritage is half-Segazzi, so that he could control the dragons.

Now it's possible to see what changes to the existing setting occured. Replace "group of dragons" during the Armor's attack with one dragon, and Anderax with Garnet, Ruby's son, and the setting for Summons appears.

Torene, is also a part of this Vay, serving among Jeal's elite guards. Friends since Jeal's politcal coup, they are very close, but their love for each other is exclusive to this fanfic.

Solon was designed for this fanfic, since I hadn't dealt much with the Five Magicians of Vay prior to Summons . Though he played a minor role in Summons , Solon will likely be added to my regular Vay universe. However, he will not possess a means of cyrogenic sleep, so any role he plays will be limited to ghosts, flashbacks, and fanfics set in ancient Vay.

Popful Mail

Popful Mail appears the least in this fanfic. The one game that appeared for SegaCD left the world relatively undetailed compared to Lunar and Vay, possibly because of its action/RPG status. However, it had two important things: an intriguing past, and a living link to them; Kazyr.

Of the three wizards Kazyr was the one least developed by his creators. Ghaleon and Sadoul both had histories and personalities that could either endear them to or annoy the hell out of the people who met them. Kazyr, well, he was Ulgar's lackey. He was being controlled, he said as much with his dying words, but he didn't do much in the game besides report to Ulgar, order his own lackeys around, and antagonize the heroes.

I decided to give Kazyr a second chance. I don't exactly remember how his "real" personality emerged, but once it did, it endeared me to him. Kazyr's magic abilities were fleshed out, and made purposely alien to that of Ghaleon and Sadoul. He is the only one of the wizards who can shapechange (both himself and objects) and to a lesser degree, alter the fabric of reality. Kazyr also had a past equal to anything Ghaleon or Sadoul possessed.

The Kazyr of my Popful Mail was dedicated to his moon goddess at an early age. His natural white hair marked him as one of the goddess' chosen, and he was trained as a wizard in the temple in which he studied. Once into his late teens his goddess offered him the duty of guarding the four orbs that maintained the seal preventing Ulgar's return. Kazyr accepted, and was granted immortality so that he could carry out his mission as long as necessary. Years later, the goddess created a partner for him, a wife, so that his long years in enforced isolation need not be lonely. Kazyr met Mira, a silver-haired werewolf and a powerful fighter.

Kazyr refuses to use weapons, a result of his training at the temple. However, since meeting Mira, he designed his wolf's head amulet, which allows him to shapechange in the same fashion as her. Originally meant as way to keep up with her during her night time runs, the amulet is now Kazyr's primary means of physical combat.

Gods are never really mentioned in Popful Mail, though Ulgar might be considered a god. The fact a moon goddess was chosen as Kazyr's patron has nothing to do with Althena, since she was chosen long before I ever typed the first chapter of Summons . So why the moon? A moon goddess was chosen because of Kazyr's isolation. He lives by night, no longer enjoying life in the day with the rest of mortality. She is the only light that watches over him. Her domain also makes it no wonder that Mira is a werewolf.
